Robert Sylvester Kelly known professionally as R Kelly is a highly talented American former music record producer, songwriter, and singer who has made so many chart-topping songs across the years. Born on January 8, 1967, R Kelly is currently in prison after he was jailed for the production of child pornography alongside several sexual related offenses dating back to 1991.

The Early Life of “R. Kelly”, Robert Sylvester Kelly

Born on January 8, 1967, Robert Sylvester Kelly who is known around the world as R. Kelly was born at the Chicago Lying-In Hospital (now University of Chicago Medical Center) in the city’s Hyde Park neighbourhood, in the South Side of Chicago, Illinois.

He started performing on the subway under the Chicago “L” track, and he would regularly busk at the “L” stop on the Red Line’s Jackson station in the Loop.

He has five siblings, with three of the five, being half-siblings. R. Kelly is the fourth child in the family of six children, with two older sisters, one older brother along with a younger brother and sister.
His mother Joanne was a schoolteacher and a devoted member of the Baptist church, born in Arkansas.

The identity of his father, who was very much absent from the childhood and life of R. Kelly, and later said to have raised two other children after R. Kelly, was unknown.

Their family lived at the Ida B. Wells Homes public housing project in the Black Metropolis–Bronzeville District of Chicago’s Douglas neighbourhood, also on the city’s south side. When he was five years old, Kelly’s mother married his stepfather, Lucious, who worked for an airline. Kelly began singing in the church choir at the age of eight.

From excepts off of his autobiography, Kelly revealed that he first had a girlfriend named Lulu, at just eight years old. Describing his young relationship affairs with Lulu, R. Kelly said their last play date together turned tragic when, after a fight with older children at a playground close to a pool, Lulu was pushed into the pool of water, and she drowned. He revealed that she was swept down-stream by the fast-moving water current. Kelly referred to Lulu as the first musical inspiration he had.

R. Kelly and Andrea got married in 1996, and they had three Children namely, JoAnn, his first daughter born in 1998, and named after the singers mother JoAnn, who died of cancer in 1993, Jaah, born 2000, and Robert Jr. born 2002.

Andrea filed for a restraining order against R. Kelly in 2005, after they had an altercation. She subsequently filed for a divorce in 2006. The divorce was finalized in January 2009, and they pair separated after thirteen years of being together.

On Sept. 27, 2021, following six weeks of trial, a federal jury in Brooklyn convicted Kelly of all nine counts of a superseding indictment charging him with racketeering predicated on criminal behavior which includes sexual exploitation of kids, pressured hard work and Mann Act violations involving the coercion and transportation of ladies and girls in interstate trade to have interaction in unlawful sexual activity.
