American singer-song writer, Taylor Swift

Born December 13, 1989, Taylor Swift, is a popular American singer and songwriter known globally for her great voice, artistical reinventions and autobiographical songwriting skills. These qualities have endeared her to a lot of people around the world known as “Swifties”. She is an influential figure in popular culture and the subject of widespread public interests around the world.

Born in West Reading, Pennsylvania, U.S.A, the singer has built her career so well that she has become a global icon and superstar who has captivated audiences across the globe with her heartfelt melodies and catchy musical lyrics. She has solidified herself as one of the most influential persons in contemporary music.

Taylor Swift in 2024, made history as she became the first artist to win Album of the Year category four times, when she won the Grammy, Album of the Year award.

Reports has it that she showed interest in music from an early age, and she made quick progression from roles in Children’s theatre, to her first appearance before a crowd, as she was only 11 when she performed before Philadelphia 76ers Game, singing the song, “The Star-Spangled Banner”. The following year, Taylor Swift, began playing the guitar and writing songs. Taking inspirations from Country Music stars like, Shania Twain and Dixie Chicks (now The Chicks).

When she was 13 years old, her parents sold their farm in Pennsylvania, to enable them to move to Hendersonville. Her father, Scott Kingsley Swift, was a stockbroker for Merrill Lynch while her mother, Andrea Gardner Swift, worked as a Mutual Fund marketing executive, but briefly. Her younger brother, Austin, is an actor.

When she was 11, she travelled with her mother to Nashville to visit record labels and submit demo recordings of Dolly Parton and Dixie Chicks Karaoke covers. Unfortunately, she was rejected by all the record labels they visited, and it led her in changing focus to songwriting.

At the age of 12, she began learning to play the guitar with the help of Ronnie Cremer, a computer repairman and local musician. He also helped Swift in writing an original song.

Swift started working with the talent manager Dan Dymtrow, in 2003. With the immense help of Dan Dymtrow, Swift was able to model for Abercrombie & Fitch, and also got an original song included in Maybelline compilation CD. At 13, Swift received an Artist Development deal after performing an original song at a Showcase by RCA Records. As a result of the deal, she began to travel regularly to Nashville, with her mother.

Taylor Swift attended Hendersonville High School for two years before she was transferred to Aaron Academy. The transfer to Aaron Academy accommodated her regular touring schedules. She graduated one year early from the academy.

While at Nashville, and as a result of a development deal with RCA Records, Swift, had the opportunity of making the acquittance of experienced veteran music stars and song writers such as Troy Verges, Brett Beavers, Brett James, Mac McAnally, and the Warren Brothers. It was there, that she formed a lasting working relationship with Liz Rose.

Swift signed with Sony/ATV Tree Music Publishing at age 14, becoming the youngest artiste signed by the record label. But she left RCA Records due to “lack of care” and the label “Cutting other People Stuff”. Becoming concerned about the growth she was going to get with the development deal with RCA Records, She said: “I genuinely felt that I was running out of time. I wanted to capture these years of my life on an album while they still represented what I was going through.”

She caught the attention of Scott Borchetta, a DreamWork Records executive who at the time was making preparations to form his own record label, Big Machine Records, at an Industry Showcase in Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe in 2005. That was not her first time meeting Borchetta, as, they had met earlier in 2004.

Taylor Swift became one of Big Machine Records first signings. Her father, bought a three percent stake in the company worth an estimated $120,000 at the time.

Releasing her debut album in October 2006, she peaked at number five, in United States of America Billboard 200. The album spent 157 weeks on the charts, the longest stay by any album on the charts, in the 2000s. She became the first female country music artist to write or co-write every track in a platinum certified debut album.

The album which she worked on with Nathan Chapman, had co-writers like Liz Rose, Robert Ellis Orrall, Brian Maher, and Angelo Petraglia. The lead single of the album “Tim McGraw”, was released in June 2006 with Taylor Swift and her mother doing much of the promotions by sending CD copies to country music radio stations across the United States.

Four more singles followed the release of “Tim McGraw“, through 2007 to 2008. There are, Teardrops on My Guitar, Our Song, Picture to Burn and Should’ve Said No. All four singles appeared on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs with Our Song and Should’ve Said No, reaching number one. With “Our Song”, Taylor Swift became the youngest person to have written and sing a Hot Country Songs number one single. The song Teardrops on My Guitar was her breakthrough single on mainstream radio and Charts.

She released two EPs, one in 2007 and the other in 2008. The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection, released in October 2007,and Beautiful Eyes in July 2008. She extensively promoted her debut album as the opening act for other countries musicians tour in 2006 and and 2007.

She also built a real estate portfolio which was estimated to be worth over $150 million, in 2023. Swift has residential properties in Nashville, New York City, Los Angeles (Samuel Goldwyn Estate), and Rhode Island (High Watch).
