BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF DIDDY (SEAN JOHN COMBS)
Sean John Combs known by his stage name Diddy, formerly Puff Daddy and P. Diddy is an American rapper, record producer, and recording executive who was born on November 4th, 1969. He is credited with the discovery and development of some of the most popular American Hip-Hop artistes like, Usher, Mary J. Blige, Notorious B.I.G, etc. Diddy is a three times grammy award winner.
Sean John Combs, born in Harlem and raised in Mount Vernon, New York, worked as a talent director at Uptown Records before he established his own record label, Bad Boys Records in 1993. The decision to push on with his recording career came as a result of the success he recorded with his very first signee, the Notorious B.I.G. Combs, known also as P. Diddy, served both as a manager and hype man to the Notorious B.I.G.
In 1997, P. Diddy released his first studio album, No Way Out. The album received critical acclaim and peaked atop the Billboard 200. The Album also received septuple platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.
Two singles from the album, “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down” and “I’ll Be Missing You” topped the US Billboard Hot 100. “I’ll Be Missing You” was the first hip hop song to debut atop the chart.
P. Diddy over the course of his career, has worked as producer for other media brands including MTV’S reality TV series, Making the Band. In 1998, he launched the Sean John, a clothing retailer with which he won Menswear Designer of the Year from the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2004. Prior to the win, he had been nominated previously in 2000.
Combs served as a brand ambassador for the liquor brand Ciroc from 2007 through 2023. He also co-founded the television network, Revolt in 2013. Diddy is till this day, regarded as one of the wealthiest musical artist in the world.
THE EARLY LIFE AND FAMILY OF P. DIDDY
Sean John Combs (P. Diddy) was born on the 4th of November 1969 in the Harlem neighbourhood of New York City to Melvin Earl Combs his father and Janice Combs (née Smalls) his mother. Mrs Janice Combs was a model and teacher’s assistant, while Mr Melvin Combs served in the in the U.S Air Force and was a very close associate of convicted New York City drug dealer Frank Lucas. At the very young age of just 33 years old, Melvin Combs was shot dead while seated inside his car on Central Park West. Sean John Combs (P. Diddy) was just two years old at the time. Diddy grew up with his mother and sister in poverty.
Diddy was raised along with his sister, by their mother alone. He grew up as a catholic and served as an altar boy. He attended Mount Saint Michael Academy, a catholic all-boys school and graduated in 1987. He was a football player for the academy, with his team winning a division title in 1986, one year before he graduated. During an interview, he revealed that the alias, Puff, was given to him as a child because he would “Huff and Puff” when he was angry.
P. Diddy was a business major at Howard University, but he left the institution after his second year.
CONTROVERSIES AND SEXUAL ASSAULT CLAIMS AGAINST DIDDY
P. Diddy’s former partner Cassie Ventura filled a multimillion-dollar sexual assault lawsuit against him in late 2023, and they both settled the case out of court. That was not the end of his presence in the courthouse as over the next few months, several civil complaints were filed by claimants who alleged that between 1991 and 2009, they had been sexually abused by Sean John Combs, with several more complaints still in the planning stages as of October 2024.
In March 2024, several properties linked with Combs were raided by the Department of Homeland Security as part of their investigations against him. Surveillance footage of Diddy physically assaulting Ventura at a Hotel was released. He issued a public apology for his actions in the video.
In September of 2024, he was indicted by a federal grand jury in Manhattan and charged with sex trafficking, racketeering, and the “creation of a criminal enterprise in which he abused, threatened, and coerced women and others around him to fulfil his sexual desires, protect his reputation, and conceal his conduct”. He pled not guilty. Twice denied bail, Diddy is presently awaiting trial in federal custody at Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
