Born on 30th December 1978, in Watts, Los Angeles, United States of America, to MR Tyrone Gibson and Mrs Pricilla Murray, Darnell Gibson and his three other siblings were raised by their mother Pricilla Murray, after their father Mr Tyrone Gibson, left the family. The R&B singer and Hollywood actor in an interview admitted that his childhood was very tough as his mother, Pricilla Murray, a waitress and single mum made efforts to take care of her four children. He stated during the interview that while growing up with his siblings, money was so scarce to the point that he would ask patrons at the local market if he could return their shopping cart to get a refund of the deposit, saying, “I’d gather up quarters all day long,” he says, “and bring the money back to my mama.”.

He went to Locke High School and also graduated from the school. While a student at the school, he found a mentor in his music teacher, Reggie Andrews who he referred to as “The Father I Never Had”. Tyrese Gibson was around 14 years old when a neighbour complimented his singing voice and encouraged him to try auditioning. Then, he began to audition for school talent shows.
